On Brown

yeah :/

I thought I was doing ok after the Brown shooting until I saw an article in my substack feed mocking the university and saying its president was to blame for the deaths. And then a new wave of sadness and anger hit me like a truck.

The smiling sun in the university’s logo contributed (probably more than it should have) to my decision to attend. It’s believed that the sun “symbolizes the rays of the sun of learning piercing the clouds of ignorance.” That’s what the education system, at its best, lets us all do. To break through our misconceptions about people and the world around us, smiling along the way.

I hope the things I do with my life honor the people who no longer have the opportunity to feel the warm sun on their face, both Ella and MukhammadAziz and the victims of the other 75+ school shootings this year in the US. I hope we all choose wisdom over ignorance so that we can truly seek out and love the people in our lives while we still have the chance.
